Route Overview

Fort Lauderdale to Key West, down the Overseas Highway.

There is exactly one road into the Florida Keys, and every vehicle that reaches Key West travels it. Carriers run US-1 south out of Broward through Miami-Dade and Florida City, then cross onto the Overseas Highway at Key Largo — 113 miles of two-lane road and 42 bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge. It’s only 180 miles, but it isn’t a normal 180 miles: full-size haulers are restricted on parts of the route, turnarounds are scarce, and a driver who doesn’t know the road will waste half a day finding somewhere to unload.

Live Market Pricing

What sets your rate.

We don’t post a flat price for the Fort Lauderdale–Key West lane, because an honest quote moves with the market. Auto transport rates rise and fall with diesel prices and carrier demand — and Keys capacity is genuinely limited, because far fewer carriers will run the Overseas Highway than will run a mainland interstate. We quote the real number live, the day you book.

Diesel & Demand
Fuel cost and how many carriers are willing to run the islands that week are the biggest movers on this lane.
🚗
Vehicle & Transport
Size and weight, running or not, and whether you choose open or enclosed all factor into the quote.
📅
Timing & Season
October through December is peak southbound as seasonal residents arrive — booking ahead locks a better rate.

★★★★★

“We come down for the season every October and stopped driving it years ago. Car picked up in Fort Lauderdale, delivered to our place on Stock Island the next afternoon. Fourth season using them.”

“Three national companies flat refused the Keys delivery. ASNM had a carrier who runs US-1 daily and quoted it same morning. Driver knew exactly where to unload in Old Town, which is not obvious.”

★★★★★

“Bought the car in Fort Lauderdale and needed it enclosed for the salt air on the way down. Clear pickup window, price held, no surprises at delivery. Booking the return the same way when I sell.”

Common Questions

Fort Lauderdale → Key West FAQ

The questions Keys shippers ask most. Have one that’s not here? Add it to your quote and a specialist will answer directly.

Rates on this lane start around $350 for a standard sedan, but there’s no flat price — it moves with diesel, carrier availability, and season. The Keys are their own market: far fewer carriers will run the Overseas Highway than a mainland interstate, so capacity matters more here than distance does. Tell us your vehicle, exact pickup and delivery, and timing, and we’ll quote the real number live — usually within the hour.
Yes — that’s the whole point of this lane. Plenty of national carriers stop at Florida City and tell you to come get it. We run door-to-door the full length of Monroe County: Key Largo, Tavernier, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine, Cudjoe, Sugarloaf, Big Coppitt, Stock Island, and Key West itself.
Transit is typically 1-2 days. The drive itself is about four hours for 180 miles — slower than a mainland run because the Overseas Highway is two lanes for most of its length with speed limits in the low 40s through the island communities. Pickup is usually 1-2 business days after booking, and In-N-Out Keys runs the lane daily, so the wait is shorter here than on most specialty routes.
October through December is peak southbound as seasonal residents arrive, and it’s the tightest capacity window of the year — book two weeks out if you can. Late summer is quietest, though hurricane season can disrupt scheduling between August and October. If you’re shipping back to the mainland in spring, book that leg early too; April and May run just as busy in the other direction.
Open transport is the economical choice and covers most shipments on this lane. Enclosed is worth considering here for a specific reason other routes don’t have: the Overseas Highway runs over open water for miles, and salt spray is constant. For a new, classic, or high-value vehicle — especially one that’ll live in the Keys long term — enclosed is a reasonable call. We’ll quote both.
Often not, and that’s normal here. Much of Old Town Key West is narrow one-way streets, and many island properties have no room for a 75-foot truck to turn. The driver will arrange a nearby meeting point — typically a shopping center lot or a wide stretch of US-1 within a few minutes of you. Carriers who run this route regularly already know the workable spots, which is exactly why the operator matters on this lane.
We’re a carrier-finder. We know the carriers running in the areas you’re shipping from, and we go to them directly — we don’t post your car to a load board and let it get shopped around. Legally, hiring a carrier on your behalf requires broker authority, so that final step runs through a licensed broker. That’s the paperwork, not the product. What you’re getting is a real, vetted operator we found for you — not a listing thrown into an auction.
